Manoah the Danite (מָנוֹחַ, manoach). A resident of Zorah who was father of Samson (Judg 13:1–25).
Manoah’s wife, whose name is unknown, met an angel who announced Samson’s birth (Judg 13:6). Manoah was present only the second time the angel appeared (Judg 13:10–20). When the angel ascended in the fire of their sacrifice, Manoah became afraid that they would die (Judg 13:22).
It appears that Manoah and his wife did not have much influence over Samson. When he chose to marry a Philistine woman, his parents were unable to dissuade him. Neither Manoah nor his wife realized that Yahweh had planned Samson’s marriage (Judg 14:4). When Samson gave his parents unclean honey that he had found in a lion’s carcass, he did not tell Manoah where he had found it (Judg 14:9).
